Maria João Pires will step away from the stage “for some time”

Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires, 80, announced this Sunday that she will be stepping away from the stage “for some time”, following the stroke she suffered last week.

The health problem led to the cancellation of concerts in Braga, Sintra and Faro, as well as performances abroad, in The Hague, Taiwan, Japan and Europe.

“I regret to inform you that I will have to step away from the stage for some time. I have a cerebrovascular health problem, which I see as a sign, perhaps a warning. I will dedicate this period to rediscovering the balance between body and spirit, and to finding joy in retiring, reading, meditating and learning from the lessons that life wants to teach me”, reads a post on the Portuguese pianist’s Instagram.

Maria João Pires also took the opportunity to thank her fans. “I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your patience, support and words of comfort.”

The artist is considered one of the greatest interpreters of classical music, with an award-winning international career.
